New York Public Library
Das Hauptgebäude der New York Public Library befindet sich im Stadtzentrum von Manhattan. Die Bibliothek wurde 1911 eröffnet und das prestigeträchtige Projekt wurde von Carrère?&?Hastings ausgeführt. Das monumentale Gebäude wurde aus weissem Dorset-Marmor gebaut, und die vordere Fassade schmücken Statuen, die Philosophie, Romantik, Religion, Poesie, Drama und Geschichte repräsentieren sollen. Das Innere ist ebenso beeindruckend wie das Äussere. Die gewölbte, mit Marmor verzierte Haupthalle, Astor Hall, hinterlässt einen besonderen Eindruck. Jedoch findet man hier mehr als nur schöne Architektur. Als eine der grössten Bibliotheken weltweit beherbergt sie 50 Millionen Dokumente, davon fast 20’000’000 Bücher. Darunter sind die Gutenberg-Bibel und die handschriftliche Kopie von Jeffersons Dokument, welches als Unabhängigkeitserklärung bekannt werden sollte.
